Bank Prefixes In New Zealand

In New Zealand, bank numbers follow a 16 digit format.

This consists of:

  • The prefix (two digits)
  • The branch number (four digits)
  • The account number (seven digits)
  • The suffix (two digits)

Whenever you receive somebody's bank account number (for example, from a Trademe seller or to pay a friend), you can tell which bank they are with by the prefix.

Every bank in New Zealand has a unique prefix, which is used as the first two digits of every NZ bank account number.

For example, if the bank number is 12-3073-0100291-01 then you know they are with ASB due to the prefix 12.
