Sad day for matched bettors.

We can no longer matched bet in New Zealand.

No, nothing about matched betting is illegal and it's still a perfectly viable way to make an income.

However, New Zealand recently had some law changes which now make this impossible to do.

First, the New Zealand government recently passed a law that makes it illegal for all overseas bookmakers to operate in New Zealand.

Obviously this is problematic for NZers trying to matched bet, because

1. We need to use Betfair for laying bets, which isn't a NZ company
2. We need a decent volume of promos to make it work, which are not available in NZ

Upon passing the law, UK company Entain now takes a stake in TAB NZ, which is the also the only bookmaker legally allowed to operate in the country.

So what it looks like is Entain has made a deal to give a bunch of money to the community, on the condition it gets to take ownership in TAB NZ and have a monopoly on betting in NZ.

That's great for Entain and the government, not so great for TAB and us Kiwis.

Now I won't go into all the obvious problems this is likely to cause (for one, TAB can now give you whatever terrible odds they want, and you have no choice but to place your bets with them) but the bottom line is we can no longer matched bet here.

This makes my course Simple Bets redundant for anyone in New Zealand, which is a shame because we had hundreds of Kiwis legitimately making a side income using it, and growing every day.

On the other hand, matched betting is thriving in Australia and better than ever.

New bookies are popping up every week, and the scene is super competitive with tons of promos on offer every day.

It's also one of the most regulated betting markets in the world, so very few shenanigans go on and I've never had a problem with any bookie in Australia, regularly keeping five figures in my accounts to cover my float.
