Been a couple of month since I did a portfolio update, mostly because nothing has been changing.

Bitcoin has been floating in the 65k to 70k range, and I’m expecting a “god candle” any month now, but who knows whether it will be 1 month or 6 months.

However, as Nick Sleep likes to say – it doesn’t matter when you’re right, as long as you’re right.

S&P 500 is also still at all-time highs, although it’s a different story for NZ/AU stocks which have been slumping recently.

Side hustles

Once the portfolio reached $100k, I stopped “actively” side hustling.

That meant things like matched betting, flipping, surveys and all that got put to the sideline.

For some context as to why – the public portfolio was only supposed to be a demonstration on how to build a portfolio from zero. I still have my personal portfolio to manage which takes up most of my time.

Now that the portfolio has reached over $100k, my expectation is that it will compound silently on its own if managed properly.

However, some “top up” capital is still required regularly.

Since starting the public portfolio in 2020, I’ve had 3 niche sites that have contributed to the public portfolio and are still continuing to do so on a passive basis – meaning I am no longer actively building/improving the sites, but the nature of these sites is they produce income passively, much like a rental property).

Since then the niche sites have contributed ~$21,000 of capital to the public portfolio, and one was also sold earlier this year for ~$4,200.

If you’re at the start of your wealth journey and looking for something to work on, I think niche sites are a great starting place. They have the potential to make you a good passive income, and as you can see, you will be building an asset you can eventually sell as well! Bitcoin has been trying to break through $71k for the last few months with no success.

However, I am confident this will happen this year.

Every month I add a small amount of Bitcoin to the public portfolio using Easy Crypto.

You can read my guide on how to get started investing in Bitcoin here.

Right now the public portfolio owns approximately 0.25 Bitcoin, constituting 20% of the portfolio, and I am still deciding whether to cap it here or continue stacking.

Again – the public portfolio is a teaching portfolio, mostly for stocks.

In all honesty, if I was running a portfolio of that size privately, the goal would be to grow it as fast as possible and I would be making it 50% to 70% Bitcoin. It’s not a surprise to me that Bitcoin is already the portfolio’s best performing asset.

However, ideally I would like the returns in that portfolio to come from stocks and follow a more “traditional” route of value investing and dividends.

The value I’m seeing right now is in NZ and AU stocks.

To me the retirement villages, in particular SUM and ARV, provide exceptional value.

Briscoes is also the best run retailer in NZ and is trading at the cheapest its been in some time. Sky TV is a monopoly in NZ with a fat dividend yield and excellent cashflow and is trading at around 3x EBITDA.

I have been accumulating all four of these stocks over the year and am continuing to do so.

Remember – prices going down should be celebrated as an investor. It means you get to acquire assets cheaply, which should appreciate handsomely over the long term.

I have zero worry about what happens in the next year or even five years. The goal is to grow the portfolio to a million and that will probably take 10+ years, everything that happens before that is just noise.
