Finally started putting some cash to work this month.
Cash allocation is down from 22% to 11%.
Most of it went into existing positions MCK, SUM and DSK, but there’s also one new position in the Top 10 which is YAL.
YAL is an Australian coal producer and by my (rookie) judgement is the safest bet on the coal trade that I talked about in this post.
I did have positions in NHC and WHC (both Aussie coal producers) as well, but have sold out of most of those to move those funds into YAL which I think is a slightly better bet.
I’ll do a longer writeup on YAL when I get a chance.
The other notable change in the public portfolio this month is I finally added some crypto.
I purchased $800 of Bitcoin, making it just over a 1% allocation.
Looking ahead, we obviously have no idea what the market will do in the short term, but the macro still looks pretty grim. Interest rates are still being hiked, inflation is at 7% (but in reality, probably more like 20%) and house prices are still tumbling.
However, last month I talked about refraining from timing the market. It’s not a viable plan to wait until the economy starts to look good before you start investing. Once the economy is looking up, markets would have rallied many months prior.
The name of the game is to simply buy assets when prices are low, and by my judgement now is a pretty good time.
